DARE generation: Ad Failure

It appears the War on Drugs is going about as well as the War on Terror. Maybe we should stop trying to declare war on ideas. USA Today ran an article about how the anti-drug ads have not been effective in reducing drug use and may actually be contributing to an increase in drug use, and this article was placed directly across from a $100,000 full page ad from an Anti-Drug group. Ouch. The claim is that by constantly talking about drugs young people are given the impression that more people use drugs than they realised and therefore want to experiment. We need to rethink our Drug policy as our current one has been ineffective in reducing drug use and has cost us billions while labeling people with problems as criminals, they are addicts and need help not jail. Well some need jail too but treatment needs to be more widely used for minor drug offences.

I was trying to think of the guys name, there was a south/cental american leader who’s slogan was, “there is not a missle made that can kill an idea” which is a great phrase. Unfortunatly the CIA proved him wrong by blowing up his plane which pretty well crushed the movement. I just wish I could remember the guys name. It was in ‘Confessions of an Economic Hitman’ which is one hell of a book.
