 Common Dreams: Drug ads

In case you can’t tell, I’m a big fan of Common dreams, it is a great little daily e-mail.

“We’re increasingly turning normal people into patients,” said Dr. Lisa M. Schwartz of the Dartmouth Medical School. “The ordinary experiences of life become a diagnosis, which makes healthy people feel like they’re sick.”

I don’t like the idea of drugging people unnecessarily. I am not Tom Cruise, there are people who absolutely need medication in order to be productive members of society. My view is simply that I cannot understand why prescription drugs are even allowed to be advertised in the same way as Coke.Your doctor should be telling you if you have a problem not your television. The responsible thing would be to simply outlaw advertising for prescription drugs. We have outlawed advertising cigarettes and there are absolutely prescription drugs that are more dangerous than a cigarette.
